Mlynarčík, Štefan ; Mrva, Jozef (referee) ; Rathouský, Luděk (advisor)
Objectivity and neutrality of current makers of online maps is hampered by the fact that the most important of them who form the public opinion are largely commercial giants. Sensitivity of approaches is desirable especially in specific situations involving territorial disputes. The textual part of the thesis brings theoretical insights to the problematics of map makers policies and their preservation or violation. At the same time is describes critical cartography as a current opposition against governmental and cooperative mapping, of which counter-mapping processes are regularly used in art, too. Practical outcome attempts to reflect specific approaches of map makers depending on particular territorial disputes. It takes place mostly in online environment, using the functions of Google Street View or Google Earth and forms of counter-mapping on the OSM platform. The goal is to bring alternative realities complicating map makers policies and governing apparatus to map projects with the international coverage.

Machytka, Daniel ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
Mgr. Daniel Machytka, Ph.D. Abstract This thesis focuses on the comparison of four selected territorial disputes and on the analysis of their related realities with an emphasis on the strategic importance of these disputed areas. The chosen topics were the territorial dispute between Russia and Japan over the Kuril Islands, the dispute between Argentina and Great Britain over the Falkland Islands, and then two multilateral territorial disputes over the Paracel and Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. This work presents these researched disputes not only from their historical point of view but also with regard to valid international regulations, especially with regard to the rules based on the regulation of the law of the sea, which was adopted in 1982 by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Last but not least, the development of such disputes was studied as close as possible to the present time, when the main time period of the presented research was the period from the beginning of the 21st century. The studied territorial disputes were first analyzed separately and then compared together in order to discover mutual macro-causal connections and key similarities. The biggest similarity is the potential for conflict, which is evident from the actions that national states use to dominate their area of...

The Importance of the Arctic in International Relations
Kopečná, Anna ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
In recent years several factors changed the importance of the Arctic in international relations. Firstly, the rapid melting of Arctic ice cover opened potential access to vast natural resources within the Arctic Ocean seabed. It is estimated that the Arctic may contain one quarter of world's undiscovered reserves of oil and gas. Secondly, the water ways along the Russian and Canadian northern coasts became ice-free, although so far just for few days every year. Should the Arctic Ocean continue to melt, then in several decades the Northern Sea Route and the Northwest Passage could become navigable for greater part of the year. This would shorten the journey distance from Europe to Asia by as much as forty percent, thereby cutting travel times and shipping costs. Finally, as the Arctic does not belong to any single country, there has been an increasing interest among the Arctic rim states, which have been working on delineating their maritime boundaries in order to ensure their territorial claims. This process has proceeded in accordance with the international legal framework as established by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Coastal states are entitled to a 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around their coastline. However, should they be able to prove...

Prestaš, Ivan ; Kocián, Jiří (advisor) ; Mejstřík, Martin (referee)
The diploma thesis entitled "Analysis of Croatian-Italian bilateral relations with focus on Italian territorial aspirations" deals with the issue of the same name. The work deals with the analysis of bilateral relations between Croatia and Italy in the last twenty years. Focus is placed on the main problematic moments in relations between the two states. Despite the obvious Italian territorial aspirations both in Istria and in other former Italian territories on the eastern Adriatic coast, Italian- Croatian bilateral relations remain relatively stable. The aim of this work is to explain this phenomenon and answer the research question whether this irredentist rhetoric had and still has a different goal, such as serving for domestic political purposes as one of the populist topics and whether these individual statements of Italian politicians had or still have influence on bilateral relations. On the basis of the (neo) liberal approach and the theoretical concepts based on it (the concept of democratic peace, the concept of interdependence and the concept of transformational power of integration) and through the mentioned problematic points where irredentist rhetoric of individual Italian politicians plays an important role, seeks consequences and suitable explanations. This is a thesis which, in...
